Today was my last day of Senior Project; I can’t believe it. Janine and I concentrated our two visits today on two autism children, which was nice as this is what my project is about. The first child was a boy I had already seen before, who is 25 months old and suffers from Goldenhar Syndrome and possible Autism. For a few times now, he has been at a daycare in the morning. Janine and I went to visit him there, as there had been complains by the daycare about how hard it is to handle him for them. Since he is very delayed in his social and emotional skills, he does not react like the other children. His vocabulary is very limited and he has barely any words, as well as his reception of language is not very developed yet. He does not know what stop means yet and does not really interact with any other children. For the daycare teachers it means that one of them will always have to look out for him and provide a one-to-one service, which they cannot at the moment. Janine went over there to see how he was doing and we were actually surprised. It seems like he is starting to get the routine more and had a really good time being outside today. For me it was very interesting to have the direct comparison of him to a normal developed child. Hopefully the other children will have a positive effect on him so that he will start to develop more towards him. Amazing was that the other children had already adapted to his situation and knew that they had to treat him differently, which will teach them a lot of tolerance and acceptance of difference at a young age.
The second visit we made today was with a 2 year old girl that has possible autism as well. Her signs of it are very clear, as she keeps on lining up objects and gets really mad when someone interrupts her routines. Today was a harder visit as she had not seen Janine in two weeks, so that she was very shy at first and had to get used to Janine again. The little girl would get really mad and did not recover quickly. The only thing that would calm her down was watching motion of objects. The girl is very visual in general but has a huge problem with keeping eye contact. When a guy came to visit her house around the end of our time with her, he just looked at her and caught her eyes, which made her so mad that she started crying.
My last day with Janine was very good as usual and it was very cool that I got the chance to see two of her children with autism again.
